The time has come for one of Disney’s most celebrated princesses, Cinderella, to get the live action treatment. The feature film, inspired by the classic fairy tale, brings to life the timeless images from Disney’s 1950 animated masterpiece as fully-realized characters.
The trailer introduces us to Lily James (“Downton Abbey”) in the iconic role of Cinderella — a young woman who, despite the cruelty and abuse she is subjected to from her stepmother and her daughters, continues to remain positive and steadfast. We also get to see the first images of Oscar® winner Cate Blanchett (“Blue Jasmine”) as the wicked stepmother, Richard Madden (“Game of Thrones”) as Prince Charming, and the one-of-a-kind glass slipper, produced by Swarovski.
The story of “Cinderella” follows the fortunes of young Ella (James) whose merchant father remarries following the death of her mother. Eager to support her loving father, Ella welcomes her new stepmother (Blanchett) and her daughters Anastasia (Holliday Grainger) and Drisella (Sophie McShera) into the family home. But, when Ella’s father unexpectedly passes away, she finds herself at the mercy of a jealous and cruel new family. Finally relegated to nothing more than a servant girl covered in ashes, and spitefully renamed Cinderella, Ella is determined to honor her mother’s dying words and to “have courage and be kind.”
Directed by Academy Award® nominee Kenneth Branagh (“Thor,” “Hamlet”), “Cinderella” is produced by Simon Kinberg (“X-Men: Days of Future Past,” “Elysium”), Allison Shearmur (“The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part I”) and David Barron (“Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows”) with Tim Lewis (“Goldeneye”) serving as executive producer. The screenplay is by Chris Weitz (“About a Boy,” “The Golden Compass”).
If the trailer is anything to go by, it loos like Cinderella will stick to the “Disney” feel for this one so I;m not expecting much deviation from the tale that we grew up with. Cinderella will be released through Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures on March 12, 2015.
