If you haven’t smelled what The Rock is cooking, it’s about time you did with Hobbs & Shaw. The action film was directed by David Leitch and is a spin-off of the Fast & Furious franchise. Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham reprise their roles as Luke Hobbs and Deckard Shaw respectively, and are joined by Idris Elba and Vanessa Kirby.
While the characters spin-off from the Fast & Furious franchise, Hobbs & Shaw requires no previous study material, diving straight into the action as these unlikely, and often irate, allies face off against an extinction-level event.
Everything you saw in the trailer was done justice during the movie. Action scenes are well-timed and executed, music and soundtrack are used to enhance the hype moments during the more thrilling scenes and a dash of comedy is finely sprinkled on top to crack smiles in the audience. Character interactions are well written and expressed, and if you were expecting any one person to steal the show, you’re going to be disappointed. The entire cast delivered on what was expected to be a high impact, energy-filled blockbuster.
The movie starts fast, as one would expect and keeps up with that pace for a while before a timely break. Despite largely being branded as an action film, there are a couple of unexpected tear-jerking moments… goddam ninjas cutting onions in the theatre!
For fans of the franchise, the friction between Luke Hobbs and Deckard Shaw is well documented. So do expect a plethora of sparks, insults and other variations of what would happen when two alpha males who don’t get along are forced to work with each other. This coupled with the fact that Shaw’s sister is in the mix simply amps up the entertainment and action factor.
Dwayne Johnson looked extremely at home in his role as Hobbs, it was as if he was playing out his own lifestyle with the added job scope as a top tracker. Jason Statham pulled off his role as Shaw, an elite British mercenary, with a certain elegance as well. Idris Elba nailed the role of Brixton Lore AKA Black Superman (Seriously, what can’t he do?).
It was both heartwarming and inspiring to see WWE Superstar Roman Reigns in action during the movie. In October 2018 he announced an indefinite leave of absence from the WWE due to leukaemia remission, and it’s good to see him back to his strong Samoan self.
If you’re a fan of fast vehicles, big explosions, good comedy, great action and super-secret high tech terrorist organisations (I mean like in a fictitious sort of way), race to your nearest theatre to catch Hobbs & Shaw!
